The Cycle Ride

My roommate had gone out of town. So I had the opportunity to use his bicycle. I grabbed it. Planned to use it for my travel to work. It was a 5 km journey from my home.

All geared and set the journey started. It was a long time since I had taken a ride in a bicycle. The first few moments were difficult. I could feel the muscles in my thighs stretching. But it became normal as the journey progressed and I was enjoying the ride.

I should say, driving a motor vehicle makes me lazy. You apply a brake, then raise the accelerator and there you go. With a bicycle, the effort that goes in to regain the momentum after the breaks are applied is tremendous. That's what triggered this thought.

How similar is this to the journey of our life. There are moments when everything comes to a still. Pulling ourselves up requires some effort. But once invested, this effort brings us back on track.

The steep climb does test our strength, its a challenge. Both for the mind and the body. Initially we are scared, "would I able to be ascend it?" Then our mind thinks of alternative ways, "walking would have been a better choice today". But lets accept it, sometimes we do end up in such situations and the only road forward is the monstrous incline ahead. We prepare ourselves to face it. Take a deep breath, oxygenate the muscles, restore the determination in the mind and start the ascend.

Halfway through we realize, it isn't that strenuous as it seemed. Some challenges look difficult on the outside. Our mind has a tendency to lure us away from challenges by making them seem tough initially. Once we start facing it, the path doesn't seem to be monster it once was. We enjoy the challenge. This pumps us to go further.

Then the moment comes. We have reached the peak of the incline. We have conquered the monster. We look back and a smile curves up. Its time for the reward, the descend ahead is heaven for a cyclist. Gravity is bliss. We embrace it. Just keeping the cycle steady, we enjoy the moment. Finally, its time to relax. Wrong! This is the moment where a little effort would produce a compounded result. We are tired, but these moments come rarely and to utilize them to the fullest is essential. The mind understands this. The body concurs, puts in some effort and sees the result instantaneously. We are propelled forward, through the path to our destiny. Through life!!
